I was originally commissioned to paint this hyperrealism watercolour in 2017 for an Art Gallery in Sevenoaks. I then displayed it at the Kent Painters Group Exhibition in Sevenoaks, where it sold.
Brighton is important to me, my parents met there and it’s where I was born, so I aimed to paint an iconic view of the seafront when the sun was setting and the street lights were coming on. Lorraine and I went there specifically to take reference photos for me to work from for the painting and we got lucky with the perfect sunset and light.
The ruins of the West Pier are on the left hand side and the convergence of all the angles is the Brighton i360. There was scaffolding over the Grand Hotel and the Shelters Rooms when we took the photos, so I had to refer to the internet to get images of how they should look.
I was very happy with how it turned out and it’s become one of my most popular images for limited edition prints.
Limited edition and open edition prints are available from my Giclée Prints For Sale page. Brighton at Dusk is also available at i360 in Brighton.
